Go beyond the way marked trails

Launch your next bike adventure from Coed y Brenin.

Trail centres are phenomenal, they offer access to great riding with little effort. You just you roll up, select a route, follow the signs and enjoy and we all love that but it’s important to remember that there is so much more to be discovered beyond the waymarked routes.

Ouitside of the boundaries of Coed y Brenin forest park you’ll find wild open country, old drovers roads and mountain tracks offering spectacular views of the Southern Snowdonia mountains. If you are lucky you might spot a red kite circling above or Welsh mountain goats who have roamed these hills for thousands of years.

Stepping away from the waymarked trails takes a little more planning and preparation but for the extra effort you’ll be rewarded with new discoveries and adventures.

A good place to start is a route or trail sharing app. Apps like Komoot and Viewranger allow you to browse other people’s shared routes/rides often shared with helpful advice on the route difficulty and wayfinding. Many modern GPS cycle computers and smartphones will allow you to download these and navigate with them but be warned, some require a phone signal with data which isn’t always available in the wilds of Wales.

If you’d rather keep things simple, you can’t go far wrong with an OS Landranger 1:25,000 map. These will provide you with plenty of ideas. These maps are marked with all rights of way so you’ll know where you can or can’t take a bike, and more importantly, they don’t require a signal or frequent recharging.

Kit will also require a little more thought. Even with the best planned routes the unexpected can happen. Weather can change, mechanicals can happen and sometimes even hardy adventurers get a little lost. So its important to be well prepared. Pack in anticipation of mishaps, take plenty of food and water and an extra layer in case you fid yourself standing around for a while or with a long walk home.

Coed y Brenin

Coed y Brenin makes a great starting place for adventures into the wilds of North Wales, and not just for Mountain Biking. You’ll find some superb gravel routes, road routes and bikepacking adventures all within easy reach. And at busy times you remain clear of some of the madness of the Snowdon area. National Cycle Network Route 82 runs right though the forest park and provides a bike friendly connection to other areas. You can explore the route and other nearby trails (including the MTB waymarked routes) on opencyclemap.org

Need more? Nearby you’ll find the easy, level, family friendly riding of the Mawddach Trail, superbly wild hiking in the Rhinog Mountains , SUP adventure with stunning mountain backdrops in Barmouth and of course, Snowdonia is only a stone’s throw away with climbing, surfing, kayaking, zipline and of course, Snowdon itself.
